About the book

Linguistic Penalties and the Job Interview looks at how institutions produce social inequality in the design and small interactional stuff of the job interview. This 'gatekeeping' encounter is an extreme example of social evaluation, where judgements of competence and character can lead to the 'small tragedies' of every life. And it is migrants who are most frequently penalised for their talk and failed by the system. This book also argues the case for practical relevance and illustrates the challenges in achieving a 'linguistic footprint' on institutions as well as taking a critical sociolinguistic stance.
