This research seminar will be led by Franziska Nössig and chaired by Professor Erica Carter from the Department of German, King's College London.

This talk presents recent research into a unique resource of Anglo-(East) German and broader East-West film relations that remains largely unexplored: Housed at the British Film Institute, the ETV archive of British communist film producer and distributor Stanley Forman (1921-2013) comprises an extensive collection of socialist documentary film from Eastern Europe, China and Latin America. While some research on Forman’s film collection exists, print holdings detailing his work as producer and distributor with international collaborators have not yet been extensively studied. This is not least due to the fact that this print collection, also held at the BFI, is unavailable to researchers. While also addressing questions of accessibility and preservation of archival collections more broadly, this work-in-progress paper focuses on Forman’s relations with DEFA in the 1960s, and discusses recent findings retrieved from archival material in London and Berlin, database research and interviews.

Free and open to all to attend. No registration is required.
