The King's Brazil Institute, in cooperation with the Africa Leadership Centre and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, celebrates the 200th anniversary of Anita Garibaldi, who was an important political figure in Brazil, Italy, and Uruguay during the 19th century. Called as eroina dei due mondi (hero of two worlds), Anita Garibaldi was born in Brazil, where she met the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi when he fled from Europe in 1834 to avoid being captured after receiving a death sentence. The event will consist of a webinar in which we will debate with academics on this topic and female leaders. It will be focusing not only in Anita’s historical figure, but specially discussing women leadership in the past and present and acknowledging the contributions made by women in politics and in international relations, and raise awareness around the importance of reducing the gender gap in this arena. The event will also exhibit the live broadcast of the 'Abertura Anita Garibaldi' and the opera scene 'A morte de Anita', written by the Brazilian composer Catarina Domenici and dedicated to King’s Brazil Ensemble.
