Speaker: Joel Wainwright, Department of Geography, Ohio State University

Climate change is not only our greatest environmental problem. It also presents fundamental challenges to our world’s political and economic order. We often say that we must immediately reduce carbon emissions. Indeed we must. But suppose we fall short? In the event of rapid climate change, what is likely to happen to the world’s political and economic arrangements? In this talk, Joel Wainwright takes up this troubling question, drawing from his recent book co-authored with geographer Geoff Mann. Wainwright and Mann contend that the coming crisis will reshape the world’s political order into a form they call ‘Climate Leviathan’.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided in BH(NE) 6.05 after the late-afternoon seminar (from 17:00).
