Why their work matters: Children supported by Literacy Pirates make four times the progress they would typically make at school alone, transforming their reading and writing skills.

Project Access XSML2

Project Access International

Project Access International is a student-led non-profit that helps young people from underrepresented and less privileged backgrounds apply to top universities in the UK, US, and Europe. Their mentorship programme connects secondary school students with mentors who guide them through every step of the application process. They also run initiatives such as summer bootcamps to boost mentees’ chances of success.

Why their work matters: Disadvantaged students are vastly underrepresented at top universities. Many lack the role models, application support, and community they need to succeed. Project Access works to level the playing field by providing free mentorship and guidance, helping students gain admissions, complete their education, and unlock future opportunities.

Team Up XSML2

Team Up

Team Up works with primary and secondary schools across London to provide small-group tuition for pupils from low-income backgrounds. Their inspiring volunteer tutors help raise academic achievement and aspirations, giving young people the support they need to succeed.

Why their work matters: Many young people from low-income backgrounds don’t have access to the extra support they need to thrive at school. Team Up provides small-group tuition that helps close this gap, with most pupils doubling their expected progress in just one term.

Reach Out XSML2

ReachOut

ReachOut is a mentoring and youth development charity that helps young people aged 9–14 build vital socio-emotional skills such as empathy, teamwork, problem-solving, and confidence. Through weekly after-school sessions, volunteer mentors and project leaders provide positive role models and engaging group activities to support young people’s growth and development.

Why their work matters: Not all children have access to opportunities to develop the socio-emotional skills they need to thrive. ReachOut provides young people with the guidance and support to build these essential skills, helping them succeed at school and in life.
