The Department of Mathematics is hosting a series of colloquia, open for all to attend.

On 5 December 2023 from 15:30-16:30, Danylo Radchenko, CNRS researcher at the Laboratoire Paul Painlevé, Lille, France, will give a talk on 'Sphere packing, energy minimization, and Fourier interpolation'. The talk will be held in person and streamed via Microsoft Teams. The location for the in-person event is the Nash Lecture Theatre (K2.31), King's Building, Strand Campus, King's College London.

A drinks reception in the Small Committee Room (K0.31) will take place after the talk.

Speaker: Danylo Radchenko

Title: Sphere packing, energy minimization, and Fourier interpolation

Abstract from the speaker: I will talk about recent results in the sphere packing and energy minimization problems and their connection to interpolation formulas that allow to reconstruct a function from discrete samples of the function itself and its Fourier transform. I will then discuss how in some exceptional cases such interpolation formulas with very good properties can be constructed using modular forms, and how this helps with sphere packings and energy minimization in 8 and 24 dimensions.

About the Speaker: After having obtained his PhD in Bonn (Germany) in 2016, Danylo worked at the Abdus-Salam center for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy), the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, and ETH Zurich (Switzerland). He is now CNRS researcher at the Université de Lille (France). He obtained prestigious prizes and grants, including a recent ERC starting grant. His research interests include the theory of modular forms, Fourier analysis as well as geometrical optimization. He focuses particularly on the connections between these three domains and derives results that are of interest for both pure mathematicians and theoretical physicists.
