The Department ranked fourth in the UK in mathematical sciences for the quality of its research outputs, with 31% of its work judged world-leading (4*) and 56% internationally excellent (3*) in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Research activity is focused on analysis, disordered systems, financial mathematics, geometry, number theory, statistics, theoretical physics, mathematical & molecular biomedicine and probability.
