The Department of Mathematics is actively working to ensure that all staff and students feel a sense of belonging in the department and find it a welcoming community where everyone can be themselves.

The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences funds two scholarships for undergraduate students as part of our commitment to supporting diversity in science in identified areas of under representation. The Women in STEM Scholarship 2026-27 is for a female undergraduate student starting their first undergraduate degree programme in September 2026. The Ethnic Minority in STEM Scholarship 2026-27 is for an undergraduate student with an ethnic minority background who is starting their first undergraduate degree programme in September 2026.
As well as actively supporting the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences’ Women in Science Initiative, the Department are currently working towards submitting to renew our Athena SWAN Bronze award, originally awarded in October 2020. The Athena SWAN charter was launched in 2005 to recognise the commitment of institutions that promote and advance the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia.
The Department of Mathematics strongly supports equal opportunities for all and the advancing of women’s careers within mathematics, and has signed up to the London Mathematical Society’s Good Practice Scheme. The Scheme sets out five principles of good practice relating to organisational framework; appointment, promotion and selection processes; departmental structures, departmental culture; and flexibility.
Every year the Department of Mathematics celebrates women in mathematics with an inclusive event for students and staff. Our most recent event in May 2025 marked International Women in Maths Day with talks from Dr Francesca Tripaldi of University of Leeds, Dr Natalie Evans of King's College London, and Professor Reidun Twarock of University or York. Previous event speakers include Dr Amy Mason, a Research Associate working in Mendelian Randomisation for the Cardiac Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge and Professor Marta Mazzocco (University of Birmingham), who shared insights from their work and their career journeys.
