Data, Dissent, and Decision-Making: Technology’s Role in Turning Protest into Policy

Online

From Meta, X, and Tiktok curating visibility to internet shutdowns silencing dissents, technology is far from neutral. This panel composed of members of the African Leadership Centre Alumni Association proposes a conversation around how digital platforms shape protest movements and their policy impacts. Drawing on cases such as Nigeria’s #EndSARS, Kenya’s Gen Z mobilisations, and South Africa’s #FeesMustFall, this panel examines whether digitally amplified dissent drives reform, fuels repression, or remains spectacles devoid of transformational impacts. It also discusses how movements can bridge the gap between mobilisation and meaningful policy transformation.
