About eight years ago, Soundararajan and Granville proposed an alternative approach to the whole subject of analytic number theory. This "pretentious" approach has now permeated the subject and has been the basis of several spectacular recent advances. In this talk Granville will give some idea of what is different about this approach and explain the interest in some of these advances.
