These two workshops are part of a study taking place in Aberdeen, Stirling, and London about real-world and in-silico behaviours.
Workshop 1 (Wed 27th May): Spatial Reconstruction Game and Videogames, will be led by Dr Jianyu Chen from the James Hutton Institute. Register here.
Workshop 2 (Thurs 28th May): Simulation Games and Environmental Conservation will be led by Dr Yuan Pan (Lecturer in Digital Humanities, King's College London) and Dr Marley Samuel (Research Fellow; University of Stirling). Register here.
It is conducted in collaboration with a team of researchers based at KCL, University of Stirling and The James Hutton Institute as part of the research programme Ecological Knowledge Games (EcoKnowGames) funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI; (MR/Z505833/1)). The workshop design and methodology have been reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee at King's and the James Hutton Institute to ensure compliance with ethical standards for social science research
Purpose
Workshop 1: The study explores how people’s mental representations of space relate to their behaviour across simulated environments (e.g. video games) and real-world situations.
Workshop 2: The study explores people’s environmental lived experiences and decision-making patterns across simulated video game environments and real-world situations.
What to expect
Workshop 1:
- Introduction & consent (with option to withdraw before data collection)
- Two gameplay sessions (analogue and video game)
- Short questionnaire (gaming experience, attitudes, background)
- A short discussion (audio- and video-recorded)
During gameplay, data such as decisions, interactions, and (for the analogue task) observations or recordings may be collected.
Workshop 2:
- Introduction & consent (with option to withdraw before data collection)
- Two gameplay sessions (playing 2 interactive digital games)
- Short questionnaire (gaming experience, decision making patterns, conservation)
- A short discussion (audio- and video-recorded)
During gameplay, data such as decisions, interactions, and observations or recordings may be collected.
Data & Privacy
During the workshop, we will take photos and videos for communication and impact purposes. Data will also be collected through the gameplay session and survey questionnaire. However, there will NOT be any connection between the graphic information from photos or videos and the data we collect from gameplay or questionnaire.
