Recent events in the Russo-Ukrainian War have highlighted the greater need for an understanding of the phenomenon of Economic Warfare. Economic Warfare exists in both war and peace, has offensive and defensive applicability, and can be considered as an Ends, Ways or a Means in modern strategic thinking parlance. To engage meaningfully with such a complex field of study there is a fundamental requirement to acknowledge the absolute need for multi-disciplinary collaboration in trying to analyse the issue.
As a contribution to this multi-disciplinary and policy-relevant mission, the Royal Navy Strategic Studies Centre, the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies and the Economic Conflict and Competition Research Group are hosting a two-day Symposium on October 18th and 19th 2022.
The event will explore the nature of the phenomenon of Economic Warfare and particularly its relationship to the maritime domain. Speakers will utilise historic and contemporary research to provide evidence highlighting areas of opportunity for the UK to utilise its maritime power to deliver strategic effects through the use of Economic Warfare. It will also indicate areas of national strategic risk and vulnerability where maritime power can help deter and protect against any opponent’s possible use of Economic Warfare against the UK. Speakers will cover a wide range of areas and expertise, coming from the academia, practitioner and policy-making environments.
Each presentation will last approximately 30 minutes with 30 minutes for Q&A.
Space for this event is limited and you must be registered to attend, so please register your intention to attend with Professor Greg Kennedy (greg.kennedy@kcl.ac.uk) or Captain Kevin Rowlands, (Kevin.Rowlands522@mod.gov.uk) by 14 October. The location for the event is:
Dockrill Room, Department of War Studies, K6.07, King's College London, Strand, London, WC2R 2LS
