In this seminar, Alf will set out some of the background principles behind the mathematics education courses offered to teachers at the University of Bristol’s School of Education. These principles run across initial teacher education, Master’s units and CPD offers.

In a nutshell, the heuristic which guides planning and action is the conviction that for dialogue to lead to new insight, there needs to be some time dwelling in the detail of experiences, in order to raise the issue, or issues, which that experience speaks to, and only then to plan next steps or actions to take. This heuristic will be exemplified with empirical data across a range of contexts.
