Join us for the official launch of the Freeman Air & Space Institute, followed by a roundtable on the Integrated Review. 

Based in the School of Security Studies, King's College London, the Freeman Air & Space Institute (FASI) is a new research institute dedicated to generating knowledge and understanding of air and space power issues in defence and security.

Join us on 23 September 2020 12-2pm, for the official launch of FASI and a roundtable on the government's Integrated Review into Defence, Security and Foreign Policy:

  • An introduction to Freeman 12-1pm, presented by the Institute co-directors and discussion on UK air and space with key experts from the defence and security field.
  • Roundtable on the Integrated Review 1-2pm, with speakers including Dr Julian Lewis MP, Sir Lawrence Freeman and Alexandra Stickings.

Launch of FASI

Institute Co-directors Professor John Gearson and Dr David Jordan will introduce the aims and upcoming plans for the new institute.

Dr Jordan will present new research on the future of UK air and space defence, followed by a discussion with speakers including Lady Moira Andrews, Director at Praetor Legal and Visiting Professor at King's College London, Peter Watkins, former Director General (Strategy & International), MoD, and Mark Phillips, Head of Government Affairs at Lockheed Martin UK and former special advisor to the Security Minister.

Roundtable on the Integrated Review

Experts will contribute to a roundtable on the forthcoming Integrated Review (IR) and future issues facing air and space policy. The discussion will consider grand strategy, MoD approaches to defence reviews, private sector perspectives on air and space power, political considerations for the IR and air and space power priorities in the coming decade.

Speakers include:

  • Sir Lawrence Freedman, Emeritus Professor of War Studies at King's College London
  • Will Jessett CBE, Visiting Professor at King's College London and former Director for Strategic Planning at the MOD
  • Dr Julian Lewis MP, Former chairman of the Commons Defence Select Committee
  • Alexandra Stickings, Research Fellow for Space Policy and Security at RUSI
  • Air Marshal (rtd) Gregory Bagwell, CB, CBE, President of the UK Air & Space Power Association

Speaker contributions will be followed by a discussion and question and answer session.
