Inaugural Lectures: Professors Steve Connor & Patrick Murphy
Join us to celebrate a special milestone for our new professors and hear about their inspiring career journeys. Doors for this event will open at 16.45, with the lectures to commence at 17.00. A drinks reception will be held immediately after the lecture at 18:00.
Registration closes at 12am on the Sunday before the lecture as King’s Venues require a list of all attendees, particularly those external to King’s 48 hours in advance of the event.
If you are a member of staff wishing to attend after registration has closed, please just email communicationsunit@kcl.ac.uk to let us know.
Professor Steve Connor
An ear for discovery: A journey in otological imaging research
Abstract
Professor Connor describes his clinical research journey in otological radiology, driven by a longstanding passion for imaging the ear and temporal bone. He reflects on major advances in depicting some of the body’s smallest structures, and how his collaboration with clinical teams, MRI physicists and other research colleagues have helped improve the visualisation of ear anatomy and disease. He considers the questions that shape his clinical research in radiology: what do the imaging appearances really mean, and how can this be translated into better patient care?
Biography
Professor Steve Connor was appointed as a Consultant Neuro-radiologist at King’s College Hospital, London in 2002. He also holds an honorary post as a Consultant Head and Neck radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He is a Past President of the British Society of Head and Neck Imaging (BSHNI) and Vice-President of the European Society of Head and Neck Radiology.
Professor Patrick Murphy
Home Mechanical Ventilation: From Physiology to Technology (and back again)
Abstract
This talk will summarise the research and academic journey I have made from PhD fellow at the London Respiratory Muscle Group through completing physiological and larger clinical trials and establishing national and international networks to deliver trials in patients with chronic respiratory failure.
Biography
Having completed a PhD at King's supervised by Professors Hart, Polkey & Moxham investigating the pathophysiology of chronic respiratory failure and the mechanism of action of home non-invasive ventilation, Professor Murphy continued academic collaborations alongside his clinical training.
The programme of work focused on novel ventilatory strategies in chronic respiratory failure and the impact on physiology and patient-reported outcomes. Clinical trial work has included high-impact publications, leading to changes in national and international guidelines.
As a clinical academic, his work has continued to be focused around his clinical role, developing collaborations with home ventilation centres in France, Spain and Norway. He has supervised PhD fellows at King's, including establishing upper airway evaluation during mechanical insufflation-exsufflation following training with the research team in Bergen, Norway.
