Indian Cinema Documentary Screening and Director Q&A
4 October 2019, 18:30 to 21:00 Please note: this event has passed
Strand Campus, London
All are welcome at this free screening of the documentary Pleasures, Prejudice, Pride: An Indian Way of Filmmaking, followed by a roundtable discussion featuring the director Piyush Roy alongside Katherine Butler Schofield (Department of Music) and Iain Robert Smith (Department of Film Studies).
The film asks a number of provocative questions, including: Is song and dance an inferior form of storytelling? Why do Western audiences love the very aspects of popular Indian cinema that Western critics dismiss as pastiche? Can there be standardised parameters for reviewing diverse national cinemas? Who sets those benchmarks? Do films from colonised nations suffer from post-colonial racism?
Tickets are free but please book in advance via Eventbrite to guarantee a seat.
