Join GIWL for a conversation with Dr Joyce Banda, the first woman to serve as president of Malawi and the second woman to become president on the African continent.

President Banda was named one of the world’s most powerful black women by Forbes in 2013 and 2014, and one of the most 100 influential people in the world by both TIME and Forbes. In 2014, CNN named her one of the most inspirational woman in politics.

She has been a tireless advocate for the rights of women and girls, including successfully working to reduce high maternal mortality rates in Malawi, promoting safe motherhood and tackling gender-based violence.

President Banda will speak to GIWL Chair Julia Gillard about her experience leading as a woman, how to overcome the gendered barriers to a career in politics, and her thoughts on women’s leadership and empowerment in Africa, particularly in light of Covid-19.
