About the event

Join us at the annual King’s Mathematics Teachers’ Conference for a day of exciting speakers and discussions on supporting and engaging pupils in the maths classroom and beyond. This in-person event in central London is open to mathematics teachers from London and beyond, as well as graduate students interested in maths education. 

This is an opportunity to discuss teaching best-practice with peers from across London, and also learn from academic staff from the Mathematics department about new areas of research, expanding your knowledge beyond the curriculum.

If the conference is over-subscribed, we will limit places to a maximum of three teachers per school, and will prioritise places for maths teachers at schools that meet the following criteria:
•    State secondary school or sixth form college
•    Non-selective secondary school, or sixth form college
•    Schools with a high proportion of students eligible for Free School Meals

Please complete the application form by Friday 22 May. Please then confirm your place with us by Friday 29 May. Any places not confirmed by this date will be offered to the waiting list.

12:00 Talk - Alive and kicking, with Dr Rosalba Garcia-Millan
Nature is a wonderful source of inspiration, from fractals in broccoli and fern, to Turing patterns in animal spots and stripes. But what can mathematical biology tell us about the physics of life? This talk will explore the topic of active matter, which refers to motile organisms that transform fuel into motion. Examples of active matter are flocks of birds swirling in the sky, and swimming bacteria that use flagella or cilia to move around. In this realm where regularity is the exception and randomness is the norm, mathematics can teach us something profound.

13:30 Workshop - Inclusive mathematics: understanding learner diversity and global perspectives, with Dr Carla Finesilver & Amy O'Brien
We will explore the diversity of learners in the maths classroom and consider how individual characteristics can influence engagement and learning. We will also discuss how incorporating the history of mathematics, including global and non‑Western contributions, can enrich teaching, promote inclusion and support the decolonisation of the curriculum.

14:15 Talk - What's so hard about the Chain Rule? with Dr Niccolo Salvatori 
Why does the Chain Rule fail so many students? The answer may lie not in calculus, but in the arithmetic lessons of primary school. This talk reveals how early habits of rule-following quietly shape, and sometimes undermine, students’ ability to reason about nested processes and change.

15:10 Keynote talk and Q&A - Marvellous Mathematical Moments, with Zoe Griffiths
In this keynote, Zoe will take you on a tour of her favourite mathematical activities that lead to wow moments. Each activity is enrichment material designed to excite students about maths, whilst also complementing topics in the secondary curriculum, from probability to shape. The session will give teachers ideas they can take back to the classroom, and get them excited about maths themselves.

Accessibility

This event will take place in a teaching room on the Strand Campus. The room is fully wheelchair accessible via lift, and there are accessible bathrooms in this building.

The nearest step-free underground stations are Waterloo and Blackfriars, but a number of bus routes stop outside the Strand Campus.
