Learn with NASA astronauts. Design a space experiment. Present your proposal to an expert panel, and see one team’s idea prepared for launch to space!

Event Details:

6th - 10th July 2026 | King’s College London

Mission Discovery returns to King’s College London in July 2026, offering students aged 14-18 the opportunity to meet and learn directly from NASA astronauts as they design a space experiment proposal.

Over five immersive days, students work in small teams to design a scientific experiment suitable for microgravity. Guided by Space Shuttle Commander Ken Ham and International Space Station Commander Steve Swanson, alongside NASA leader Sarah Murray and professors from King’s College London, participants experience the challenge, creativity and teamwork involved in real space missions.

Why Mission Discovery?

Mission Discovery combines space science with leadership development, giving students the opportunity to:

  • Learn directly from astronauts who have commanded missions in space
  • Strengthen university, UCAS and future career applications
  • Develop confidence in public speaking and presentation
  • Build teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Experience university-style life in central London
  • Collaborate with motivated peers from across the UK and internationally
  • Gain insight into careers in space, science and engineering
  • Receive mentorship from astronauts, STEM professionals and postgraduate researchers
  • Be awarded a certificate signed by NASA astronauts and leading university professors

What Students Do

Students take part in a mix of teamwork challenges and interactive sessions, alongside Q&As and presentations from astronauts and space industry professionals.

They develop a proposal for a scientific experiment designed for space. Along the way, they explore how experiments are created for microgravity, research ideas, and refine their approach as a team.

Each team is supported by a dedicated PhD or postgraduate mentor, alongside guidance from NASA leaders and space professionals.

The programme culminates in a final team presentation, where students pitch their experiment proposal to an expert judging panel, with one project selected to be developed for launch to space.

Residential Option

A supervised residential package is available for students travelling from outside London. The residential programme includes:

  • University accommodation
  • Continental breakfast provided in student flats
