Occasional Scatterings draws together photographic works made by David Penny during his residency at King's College London within the Photonics and Nanotechnology Group, working alongside scientist Dries Maurice. It presents two new bodies of work which explore dialogues between the scientific laboratory and the photographic darkroom and studio as sites of research and experimentation. The project continues Penny’s investigation of expanded thinking in photography, materiality, objects, and their images.

The exhibition features abstract, cameraless photographs produced by direct exposure of light onto analogue photographic film and paper.

*The UNESCO International Day of Light is celebrated on 16 May each year, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. Events are hosted on or around the date.
