Rising Brazil: Postmortem, looking forward

Brazil’s image as a rising power faces difficult times. Celebrated as a case of rapid ascent in global hierarchies not long ago, the country is now experiencing sustained reversal and decline.

This talk begins by offering a postmortem of the scholarship on the rise of Brazil, identifying core themes and gaps. It then turns to the conceptual avenues that could and should inform the next generation of scholarly writing on the international relations of Brazil.

Matias Spektor is an Associate Professor at the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) School of International Relations in São Paulo. He obtained his DPhil in International Relations from Oxford in 2007.

He is the author of, amongst other works, 'Kissinger e Brasil' (Zahar, 2009) and 18 Dias (Objetiva, 2014). He has published his research in academic journals, such as the Journal of Democracy and Foreign Affairs. From 2016 to mid-2019, he wrote a weekly column in the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.
