Same prison, same prisoners, different staff: radically different outcomes?

Bush House, Strand Campus, London

14DecCMS main–Same prison, same prisoners, different staff radically different outcomes

Our prisons are full, with too much crime and too little rehabilitation inside them. More places and funding are part of the answer. But what if the single biggest thing we can do to transform outcomes for prisoners and fix our prisons is invest in the staff on the landings?

Unlocked Graduates and the Policy Institute and School for Government at King's College London are delighted to invite you to the launch of the final findings from the Vanguard Wings project, a first-of-its-kind randomised controlled trial at HMP Wandsworth and HMP Pentonville that set out to answer exactly that question.

For the last decade, Unlocked Graduates has championed a simple but ambitious idea: that prisons cannot outperform the quality of their frontline staff. Through its leadership development programme, it has placed nearly 900 graduates as frontline prison officers, and from that experience has built a model for what makes officers effective: recruiting for values, exceptional training and the trust to lead change on the landings.

The Vanguard wings applied that model to dedicated wings for the first time, with King's College London independently evaluating the impact. At this event, we will reveal the results and discuss what they mean for the future of prisons.
