Explore the news ballads of early modern Europe in this public event, with informal talks on the presence and circulation of news in the street, and performances of news ballads by King’s Music students. Balladeers were an important part of the news network in early modern Europe, and their songs covered stories from politics and military conflict to natural disasters and wonders, strange births, and gave reports on crime and punishment. Their songs were sometimes printed with accompanying wood-cut illustrations, sold cheaply on the streets, and posted in taverns. The news ballad was part of the visual and literate culture of the early modern city, and an important part of the soundscape of its streets.

Speakers

Una McIlvenna is a Lecturer in History at the University of Melbourne working on European execution ballads from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
