Join Professor Jairo Nicolau as he discusses Brazilian politics since the 2018 election and the rise of Bolsonarismo.

About the speaker

Jairo Nicolau is a Professor at the School of Social Sciences at the Centre for Research on and Documentation of the Contemporary History of Brazil, Getulio Vargas Foundation in Rio de Janeiro.

He studied social sciences as an undergraduate at the Federal Fluminense University and has a master's and PhD in political science and sociology from the University Institute for Research of Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ).

He is the author of many journal articles and book chapters on voting and elections in Brazil. Amongst his books are 'Representatives of Whom? The Journey of Your Vote from the Ballot Box to the Lower House of Congress' (Zahar, 2017); 'Electoral Systems' (FGV, 2012); and 'Elections in Brazil: From the Empire to the Present Day' (Zahar, 2012).

Jairo is currently a visiting scholar in the King's Brazil Institute.
