The King’s Brazil Institute, in cooperation with the KCL Modern Languages Centre, the African Leadership Centre and the Centre for Mexican Studies (UNAM – UK) launched the Multilingual Literature Events Series on Thursday 21st October 2021. This event was a success and featured a virtual Keynote Address from Dr Ana Maria Sousa Aguiar de Medeiros (KCL) as well as in-person discussions by panellists Sitara Khan (Poet, Author and Educator) and Yara Rodrigues Fowler (Author), chaired by Maísa Edwards (KCL PhD Candidate). We explored topics such as the importance of multilingualism and multiculturalism, reading multilingually and in languages other than English, and bilingual editions of literature.

This series of events aims to celebrate and showcase the importance of reading multilingually and multiculturally. On Thursday 18th November we will have the first of our two online seminars, which will explore Women Authors and Works about Women. This will later be followed by Works in Translation (Thursday 9th December 2021). We will conclude the Series in February, during the King’s College London Brazil Week, with a Closing Event featuring King’ College London Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD student's participation as well as debates and interviews with prominent bilingual and multilingual authors.

Join us Thursday 18 November for the second instalment the Multilingual Literature: Celebrating Multilingualism and Multiculturalism Series! This seminar will discussions by panellists Ayesha Harruna Attah (Author) and Joana Nastari (Playwright, Performer and Screenwriter) and chaired by Ana Aurora Borges (Art Manager and Curator). We will be exploring works by women authors, works about women and the importance of visibility and inclusivity.

Ayesha Harruna Attah(1)

Ayesha Harruna Attah is a Ghanaian-born writer living in Senegal. She was educated at Mount Holyoke College, Columbia University, and New York University. She is the author of the Commonwealth Writers Prize-nominated Harmattan Rain; Saturdays Shadows; The Hundred Wells of Salaga, currently translated into four languages; The Deep Blue Between, a book for teen readers; and Zainab Takes New York, a rom-com. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, New York Times Magazine, Elle Italia, Asymptote and the 2010 Caine Prize Writers' Anthology.

Joana Nastari

Joana Nastari is a playwright, performer and screenwriter. Joana’s work is cross-form, political and collaborative. Her writing has been described as razor sharp, hilarious and glitteringly poetic. She writes about sex work, slugs as queer icons and matriarchal Brazilian families. Her debut show “F*ck You Pay Me” saw several sold out runs and won multiple awards.

Ana Aurora Borges

Ana Aurora Borges is an Art Manager and Curator of the works of two important Brazilian artists, Antônio Gaudério (@antonio.gauderio) and Rita Wainer (@ritawainer), known for their photography and paintings. She is a BA graduate in Linguistics and Literature from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil.
