We are now seeking to appoint an exceptional leader to the role of Dean for Research for the highly successful Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences (FoDOCS), the largest dental faculty in Europe. The Dean for Research is a member of the faculty leadership team and is responsible for leading the research agenda of the faculty, developing strong cross-disciplinary collaborations, and leading by example in raising the research profile. Reporting to the Executive Dean and working closely with other faculty and university leaders, the Dean for Research will be expected to lead and inspire, continue to develop a research culture of inclusivity, collaboration, excellence, and translational impact with a foundation of strong compliance. Managerial experience and leadership qualities within a complex setting are essential, alongside the ability to encourage and nurture interdisciplinary opportunities, and partnerships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, as well as provide mentorship and guidance to early career researchers. The faculty distinguishes itself by its unique research portfolio in dental, oral and craniofacial sciences, embracing blue skies discovery research in addition to translational and clinical sciences. The successful candidate will therefore bring a distinguished profile in a field relevant to the faculty with evidence of securing grants and publishing in top journals, as well as experience of driving research agendas and identifying future opportunities.
The Dean for Research is among the principal officers of the Faculty and supports the Executive Dean by providing academic leadership and strategic direction in relation to the Faculty’s research agenda. The role-holder will: • Provide outstanding leadership and direction within the Faculty on all matters relating to research and knowledge transfer; promoting research excellence and innovation throughout the Faculty. • Drive forward the Faculty’s strategy, successfully implementing strategic objectives. • Work with the Vice Deans (Research) in other Faculties to promote cross-faculty collaboration and to co-ordinate major strategic research initiatives. • Represent the Faculty’s interests in the development of university policy, setting and confirming commitment to policies and regulations and take appropriate actions to ensure the Faculty’s commitment to compliance. • Promote and foster a stimulating, innovative and inclusive research environment across the Faculty.
• To provide strategic leadership to sustain and develop the Faculty’s research. • Actively participate in recommending and making strategic planning decisions for the Faculty, including contributing to the Faculty’s submission to the College’s annual planning round. • Develop relationships with key sector funders and their senior personnel in order to understand their goals and strategies and the alignment with the Faculties goals and Strategies. • Foster and build cross disciplinary relationships between the Faculty and other schools within King’s College London as well as with researchers at external partner institutions. • Serve on the Faculty’s Executive and other committees. • Chair the Faculty’s Research Committee. • Engage with the Faculty’s Research staff committee and PGR committee • Sign off Worktribe applications on behalf of the faculty • Organise triage for funding schemes with caps (i.e. UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships) • Represent the Faculty in the Dentalliance Research working group
• Work with the Executive Dean, Centre Leads and Academic Lead for Impact, to ensure the strongest possible submission to REF including the production and selection of 4* publications and generating 4* impact case studies and preparing the submission for the Faculty. • Oversee research activities, including records of grant applications, awards, and publications. • Work toward improving practices and management systems supporting research grant applications and delivery. • Participate in discussions on optimising research performance and to prepare research based submissions for the Faculty. • Provide guidance and support to increase Faculty research income and research overheads, encouraging a distribution of funding sources. • Provide forward intelligence of new funding opportunities and funding themes. • Grow clinical research involvement and funding, especially engaging clinicians and NHS staff. • Engender dialogue and collaboration between discovery, translational, and clinical researchers.
• Take part in recruitment of new academic staff ensuring high quality research and integration with faculty strategy. • Support research staff through research staff committee and uphold concordat. • In collaboration with the Dean for Education, ensure active engagement of researchers in teaching. • Organise a Research away day each year and support Research staff away day and PGR student away day. • Oversee Research Culture initiatives and ensure a positive research culture is embedded in activities. • Act as Research Integrity Champion for faculty and oversee Faculty Research Integrity Advisors.
• Advise the senior management team on the required level and use of resources available to the Faculty to ensure delivery of the research strategy. • Recommend and coordinate the preparation of strategic bids for capital and research funding. • Respond to relevant policy initiatives and changes to research funding. • Work with Lead for Impact to maximise opportunities for technology and knowledge transfer activities.
• Support the Associate Dean for Doctoral Studies in ensuring the sufficiency of research training available to Faculty PhD students including the admission and welfare of the students, the allocation of supervisors, space and other resources, and the monitoring of progress and the achievement of satisfactory completion rates. • Work closely with Centre Leads and the Faculty Health and Safety Officer, ensure compliance with Health and Safety Regulations in laboratories within the Institute. • Oversee an informative and outward looking research website presence for the Faculty, working with relevant staff to ensure that research information is comprehensive and up-to-date. • Represent the Faculty’s research interests and initiatives on College-wide committees
In addition to the principle role and main duties and responsibilities, the Dean for Research will be required to make an ongoing contribution to research and educational activities as well as promotion of equality in the Faculty according to their level of seniority, expertise and present activities. Furthermore, the Dean for Research will be expected to actively participate in the promotion of the Faculty locally, nationally and internationally and to otherwise enhance the standing of the Faculty through scholarship and/or improvement in activities leading to esteem factors of national/international importance.
