The Executive Director will play a key role in ensuring the University delivers on its strategic ambitions identified in King’s 2030, through oversight of the institution’s project and programme portfolio and the effective performance monitoring and reporting of that portfolio. The role combines high-level strategic analysis, providing assurance to the University’s Vice-Chancellor (VC) and senior team on the progress, benefit-realisation and risks associated with strategic initiatives. Reporting directly to the VC, this new role will ensure that the University’s strategic goals are translated into measurable outcomes, supported by robust data and performance insight. The postholder will lead on the development and implementation of the University’s performance monitoring framework and will have line management responsibility for the Portfolio Office, ensuring consistent governance, reporting, and alignment of strategic projects and programmes. The postholder will also provide constructive challenge and support to the officers accountable for the strategic delivery to identify and resolve risks and issues. The role will help ensure a culture of strategic accountability, project management, benefits realisation and continuous learning that will be critical to the University’s on-going and future success. This role sits within the VC’s Office and line manages the King’s Portfolio Office (approx. 5 FTE).

• Design, implement and maintain a robust enterprise monitoring and evaluation framework for the University’s K2030 strategic plan and institutional KPIs. • Track portfolio delivery against strategic objectives, ensuring clear line of sight from institutional strategy through to project execution. • Provide robust reporting across the portfolio, providing continuous updates, insight reports, and performance dashboards to the Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Team, University Executive, University Council, and other key management and governance forums.

• Partner with the planning, finance, and business intelligence teams to ensure data integrity and insight for portfolio delivery monitoring and decision-making. • Ensure strategic KPIs and performance indicators are aligned to measurable outcomes and reported through accessible tools (e.g., dashboards, scorecards). • Interpret complex data to highlight trends, risks, and opportunities, making recommendations for improvement. • Monitor and be attuned to the external environment, to identify developments that might impact the Portfolio, for example in government policy and regulatory standards.
• Maintain a strategic delivery risk register and work with senior stakeholders to manage risk mitigation across the portfolio. • Exercise judgement in flagging and escalating risks and providing assurance to the Vice Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor’s Senior Team on progress, impact, issues and compliance with project governance frameworks. • Work with accountable officers and programme leads to resolve risks and issues and maintain delivery momentum.
• Build strong and effective working relationships with senior leaders in the VC’s senior team, across faculties and directorates to drive ownership of strategic goals and performance metrics. • Communicate progress on strategy delivery in a clear, engaging manner tailored to academic and professional audiences. • Promote a culture of evidence-based planning, delivery, accountability and follow-through.
