The role

The Faculty is seeking to appoint a new Head of the Defence Studies Department to be based at the UK Defence Academy, Shrivenham. The Defence Studies Department celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022 and is one of very few academic departments in the world focused on understanding the complex realm of war, conflict, security and international politics through inter-disciplinary teaching, research, and engagement. Defence Studies sits within the School of Security Studies, alongside the War Studies Department and King’s Institute of Applied Security Studies (KIASS), together forming one of the largest communities of scholars in the world dedicated to producing world-leading research on all aspects of security, international relations, and defence studies. Our research develops new empirical knowledge, employs innovative theory, and addresses vital policy issues. We are seeking to appoint a distinguished scholar who has an outstanding international profile in the field of Defence Studies or with expertise in related fields such as strategic studies, international security, and contemporary war, to lead a vibrant research and scholarly community within the unique environment of the UK Defence Academy. The post holder will lead the department (currently numbering circa 70 staff), fostering and contributing to delivery of outstanding research-led professional military education. Integral to the success of this role is the ability to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with a range of stakeholders, both within the university and amongst our military partners, leading on contract negotiations and financial planning in the context of the unique position of the Department within the Defence Academy and the CSAP contractual relationship. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field and have a high-quality track record of publications.

Key responsibilities

• To take responsibility for the development, planning, organisation and delivery of professional military education under the CSAP contract, including postgraduate teaching activities within the Department of Defence Studies; • To contribute to the enhancement of the Department/School’s research and education profiles and reputation, fostering cultures, behaviours and collaborations commensurate with a leading university; • To contribute to the academic and strategic leadership of the Department/School as requested by the Head of School; • To manage administration and citizenship across the Department based on the Academic Performance Framework and Workload Allocation Model; • Provide oversight and leadership, in co-operation with the Contract Delivery Manager, of the reporting and operation of the CSAP contract; • To recruit, supervise, guide and support postgraduate research students and/or research staff to support a high-performance culture. • Overview and input into professional services plans and support to Departments through School Leadership Team meetings. • Promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion principles within the department ensuring that College and Faculty principles, values and practices are embedded in all activities. • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be required by the Head of School, or the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy within which the School sits. The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

The School of Security Studies

The School of Security Studies is dedicated to the understanding of security issues, broadly defined, in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. Harnessing the depth and breadth of expertise across its three units: the War Studies Department, the Defence Studies Department, and the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies, the School is one of the largest multi-disciplinary communities of scholars in the world engaged in the teaching and research of all aspects of conflict, war, security, international relations, strategic studies and defence. Professional Military Education

Our academic staff are at the forefront of innovative professional military education, combining their world-leading research with pioneering techniques that respond to the ever-evolving needs of military education. The courses in the Defence Studies Department equip our students with the knowledge, intellectual skills, and creativity needed to succeed in a complex and demanding operating environment. King’s College London’s support to the UK Defence Academy (which began in 1997) is currently delivered under the Command and Staff Academic Provision (CSAP) contract with the Ministry of Defence, which runs until 2027, with the possibility of two 1-year extensions.
