Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our society, our economy, and our environment. The UK is the 3rd largest AI market, investing heavily in AI research, infrastructure and skills. King’s is committed to ensuring AI brings positive benefits to all and is ideally placed to respond to these developments. Our location, convening power and multi-disciplinary research spans health, bioscience, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, business and law. King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Futures Institute unify our disciplines and provide an optimal environment to foster future AI leaders and impact. King’s ambition is to transform research, education and entrepreneurship through our AI+ initiative. This year, we launched a major recruitment effort to appoint up to 20 AI+ Academic Fellows, building a critical mass of interdisciplinary research talent to accelerate the development and adoption of AI, while ensuring its safe, ethical and socially beneficial impact. We are now delighted to build on this momentum by establishing four AI+ Professorships focused on AI development across all disciplines, including health, bioscience, physical sciences, social sciences, security, humanities, business and law. These posts will develop world-leading research that cuts across faculties and disciplines, driving innovation, impact and application. Working closely with the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the new Professors will help shape the University’s strategic direction in AI, foster collaborations across our academic community, and provide mentorship and leadership to the incoming cohort of AI+ Fellows. These appointments represent a significant investment in the future of AI at King’s, and we warmly invite outstanding candidates who share our vision to join us in shaping the next generation of research, talent and societal impact. The emergence of large language models, generative AI, and algorithmic decision-making systems has triggered a profound shift in how knowledge is produced, disseminated, and assessed. In response, King's aims to become an AI-first university - embedding artificial intelligence across research, teaching, and institutional practice to enhance student experience, promote equity, and shape the future of research and learning. To achieve this, we are engaged in a major strategic investment in “AI+”, focused on AI innovation and application across interdisciplinary themes including, but not limited to, Health, Technology, Security, Creative Industries, Business, Law and Education. We aim to bring the full potential of AI to research and education across King’s, building on existing expertise. Subsequently, King’s is investing in six AI+ professorships as part of our strategic ambition to be a globally leading university in artificial intelligence innovation, application and impact. Central to this ambition is interdisciplinary research that harnesses AI to address societal, environmental and global challenges, drawing on the humanities, social sciences and STEM. Initially, we shall recruit four AI+ professorships focussing on AI+ research leadership. The successful candidates will play a strategic role in the advancement of AI at King’s, from developing world leading impactful research leading to innovation and application, to collaborating with the talented cohort of AI+ Fellows we are recruiting across the university, shaping the university’s approach to impactful, innovative research, as well as AI-enhanced pedagogy. Each of the professorships will be hosted in one of our faculties and play a leading role in the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence, where they will be connecting interdisciplinary expertise, driving collaborations and leading strategic funding opportunities to drive impact across the university. King’s is committed to cultivating a community of interdisciplinary AI expertise. Later in the academic year, we shall recruit to the two remaining AI+ professorial posts focussing on educational innovations.
Key responsibilities
• Provide inspiring academic and research leadership in artificial intelligence within the King’s AI + community, and influence the national and international debate of AI. • Build and facilitate partnerships in AI within King’s and also between King’s and external organisations, as well as contribute to and support King’s in delivering impact and Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) ambitions. • Establish, develop and sustain an internationally competitive, externally-funded research programme consistent with, or complementary to, university research strategies. • Identify strategic development opportunities in teaching and research and contribute to the development of these ideas. • Contribute to the teaching, project supervision, and administration of the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. • Supervise and train postgraduate and undergraduate students to ensure their effective development. • Lead, oversee, and facilitate the development of multi-disciplinary, internationally competitive, externally-funded portfolio of grant income. • Contribute to national and international Research Council activities and similar panels as appropriate. • Work with and support the leadership of the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence to shape future strategy and ensure a thriving interdisciplinary community of AI researchers and educators. • Contribute to driving and ensuring a positive and inclusive research culture. • Actively contribute to realising the potential of AI to transform research across a range of disciplines, including through enthusiastic participation in the cross-university King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence. The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

The King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence is accelerating the development and use of AI in ways that are safe, secure, and have real positive impact on some of society’s most urgent challenges. King’s AI is pluralistic by design. It is an “AI+” that draws on diverse techniques and methods; emphasizes good data and AI governance; addresses fairness, privacy and sustainability concerns; and enables more voices from across the ecosystem to shape AI tools for the better. Through AI+ King’s is investing in and equipping the AI leaders of the future, and the King’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence brings together the best minds at King’s and beyond to do science better with AI and drive innovation, collaboration, and discovery. Launched in 2022, the King's Institute for Artificial Intelligence has created a coherent and visible presence for AI at King's, driving interdisciplinary research development, community coordination and ways of working.
