Role Purpose

King’s College London’s Better Health & Care Hub is a world-leading, cross faculty initiative to develop research and education dedicated to the transformation of health and care, in partnership, and on a local, national and international scale. The Hub aims to accelerate high-quality growth in research, education, and impact, all focused on improving the quality, equality and value of health and care worldwide. The Hub is led by the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC), in collaboration with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. This post for a new (Readership or) Professorship in Mental Health and Care Research will be attached to the Better Health & Care Hub and based in the Health Service & Population Research (HSPR) Department, part of the School of Mental Health and Psychological Sciences, at the IoPPN. HSPR is a multi-disciplinary department, including clinical, social, health and population scientists, which conducts world-leading research to better understand and to improve mental health outcomes, systems, and care, particularly in disadvantaged and marginalised populations. The successful candidate will provide academic leadership and foster interdisciplinarity within and between the Hub and the IoPPN. They will have the skills and commitment to drive the vision of the Better Health & Care Hub in applied health research and education, particularly as it applies to populations of interest to HSPR and the IoPPN. They will contribute to one or more of the core pillars of the Hub (Careforce, Frugal Innovation, and Communities – see Better Health & Care Hub | King's College London) and align with the strategic aims of the Hub to pioneer innovative evidence-based approaches to improve care and support, to spearhead research, impact and education, and to enable rapid and scalable responses that are relevant to current and future health and care challenges and that reduce inequalities to improve outcomes for all. Areas of particular interest to HSPR include youth mental health and mental health of marginalised groups, but other areas will be considered for the right candidate. The successful candidate is expected to have an international reputation in their field, an established research programme, a track record of publications, grant income and wide-reaching research impact, and potential for significant future grant income in a field relevant to HSPR and the IoPPN. They will be expected to develop, support and foster a research team of mid and early career research staff and students and establish collaborations across the IoPPN, the FNMPC, and across King’s more broadly. The successful candidate will have strong leadership, interpersonal and education skills, will champion an inclusive working environment, and will contribute to administrative activities and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Key Responsibilities

• To maintain a high-quality research portfolio as Principal Investigator in areas of relevance to Department and the Better Health & Care Hub and the broader strategies of the IoPPN and King’s College London. • To provide co-investigator expertise on other grant funded projects at King’s College London and with external organisations. • To acquire funding through grant applications to Research Councils, NIHR and QR-bearing charitable organisations and to support early career research staff to apply for research funding and fellowships. • To build capacity within the Department and the Hub by fostering the development of themselves, their teams and others, including postgraduate research students, and research and academic staff. • To provide line management and support within an inclusive environment to research staff employed on research grants held and early career academic staff in the department. • To enhance the research profile of the Department, the Hub and the IoPPN through maintenance of a consistent high-level output of publications and other dissemination activities of internationally excellent quality. • To actively engage in knowledge dissemination to ensure impact at the level of patients and their families, in addition to academic and policy-related impact. • To contribute to the teaching programmes in the Department, the Hub and the IoPPN, within relevant areas of expertise. • To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate taught research projects for teaching programmes in the Department, the Hub, the IoPPN and the NMPC more broadly. • To supervise and train postgraduate research students and postgraduate research staff to support their career and professional development. • To contribute to administrative and leadership activities in the Department, the Hub, the IoPPN, and the University, including contributions to strategic planning, enhancing the research culture, mentoring of early career staff, and conducting performance development reviews. • To maintain a national and international profile through regular attendance and presentation at academic meetings, and to support or lead relevant scientific and professional bodies and organisations. • PhD or equivalent Doctoral qualification in a discipline relevant to the Better Health & Care Hub (e.g., psychology, nursing, health services research, population science, etc.). • Evidence of external research funding as principal investigator and/or co-investigator, and potential to secure future external research funding and lead on applied health and care research grant delivery. • Track record of published research of national and international quality relevant to the Better Health & Care Hub activities. • Experience of a range of education contributions, including undergraduate or postgraduate teaching, assessment and curriculum development, alongside ability to deliver excellent quality teaching and student supervision. • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, with emerging evidence of collaborations across organisations. • Experience of line managing academic and/or research staff and demonstrated excellence in mentoring and supporting early career staff and students. • Emerging evidence of contributions to academic planning and strategic development. • Commitment to research impact and dissemination of own work beyond academia, including emerging evidence of delivering wide reaching and significant impact from research.

About the Health Service & Population Research Department

The overall goal of the Department of Health Service & Population Research (HSPR) is to conduct world-leading research and education using the social and health sciences to better understand and to improve health outcomes, systems, and care both locally and globally, with particular focus on disadvantaged and marginalised populations. HSPR is multi-disciplinary, including health care professionals, epidemiologists, economists, implementation scientists, qualitative methodologists, service users, social scientists, and statisticians. We work with academic, clinical, and policy organisations locally in London and the UK, and internationally in low, middle, and high-income countries.

HSPR aims to:

• Understand the onset of mental health problems • Develop strategies for prevention and influence policy • Improve access to evidence-based mental health services • Improve the quality of mental health services • Achieve the best outcomes for service users and their families • Promote service user recovery and the rights of service users • Challenge stigma and discrimination Our research involves the rigorous application of the methods of mental health sciences to better understand population health and health systems and to evaluate the efficacy and implementation of services and treatments. This is carried out in seven research groups.
