Alumni recognised in the 2021 New Year Honours List

There were 24 King’s alumni who featured in the 2021 New Year Honours List.

The New Year Honours List this year highlights the contribution of many involved in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic much the same as the delayed The Queen’s Birthday Honours List in October 2020. A host of alumni have joined King’s staff this year in being honoured by The Queen.

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (MPhil, Clinical Psychology) has been awarded a Knighthood for services to people with autism. Sir Baron-Cohen was a Professor at King’s Institute of Psychiatry from 1988-1994 and is noted for his writing on humanising society’s approach to those with autism and Asperger’s syndrome.

Dr Stuart Hopps (Spanish, 1964) was awarded an OBE for services to dance. Dr Hopps has choreographed for leading opera and theatre companies and over 20 feature films including The Wicker Man (1973) and A Knight’s Tale (2001).

  • Dr Carlton A W Evans MBBS MD MRCPsych (Medicine, 1990) awarded an MBE for services to global health.
  • Professor Christopher J S Hodges (Medical Ethics and Law, 2004) awarded an OBE for services to Business and Law.
  • Christopher Mann (History, 1969) awarded an MVO for services to Cumberland Lodge.
  • Christopher Woolard AKC (History, 1995) awarded a CBE for services to Financial Regulation.
  • David Stanley (Music, 1998) awarded a BEM for services to People with Special Needs.
  • David Stuart MRCP (Biophysics, 1974) awarded a Knighthood for services to Medical Research.
  • Olsen Jacques Oxenham (Anatomy & Human Biology, 1979) awarded a BEM for services to Policing.
  • Dr Judith Webb (Botany, 1972) awarded a BEM for services to Conservation of Wildlife.
  • Louise Di Mambro (Law, 1975) awarded an OBE for services to the Administration of Justice.
  • Professor Mark Bowles MBBS (Medicine, 1995) awarded an MBE for services to the NHS during COVID-19.
  • Mark Stageman AKC (Engineering, 1988) awarded a BEM for services to Young People and Scouting.
  • Mary Sheridan (Midwifery Research, 2018) awarded a BEM for services to Midwifery in the NHS.
  • Matthew Abel (War-studies Non-award, 2010) awarded an OBE for services to Defence.
  • Dr Myrddin Rees MBBS (Medicine, 1973) awarded an OBE for services to Liver Cancer Surgery.
  • Paul Thorogood (Defence Studies, 1998) awarded an MBE for services to football.
  • Dr Richard Harling (Medicine, 1994) awarded an MBE for services to Public Health.
  • Emeritus Professor Roger Jones F Med Sci (Medicine, 1973) awarded an OBE for services to General Practice.
  • Sarah K McLean (Theology and Religious Studies, 1992) awarded an MBE for services to the Burmese ex-Servicemen of the Crown during WWII.
  • Shravan Joshi (Chemistry, 1997) awarded an MBE for services to Diversity.
  • Professor Simon Baron-Cohen (MPhil, Clinical Psychology) awarded a Knighthood for or services to People with Autism.
  • Dr Stuart Hopps (Spanish, 1964) was awarded an OBE for services to Dance.
  • Tanjit Dosanjh (Biomedical Science, 2002) awarded an OBE for services to Optometry.
