Experiences of people affected by dementia from diverse backgrounds in South Africa

Adele van Wyk discussed her study at the International Health and Social Care Workforce Webinar Series

Cape Town South Africa

Unit researcher Adele van Wyk presented to an audience of over 50 people today in the latest in the International Health and Social Care Workforce Research Webinar Series.

Adele discussed findings from her PhD about experiences of people affected by dementia from diverse backgrounds in South Africa. The presentation outlined the study recommendations for practice and in particular explored Adele’s positionality as a white, female, social work-qualified researcher. In the discussion, audience members asked questions about South Africa which highlighted the different cultural attitudes to dementia as well as the range (and lack) of service provision in this context. This study was funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission UK.
