Dr Shuangyu Li, Reader in Clinical Communication & Cultural Competency and Director of King's Cultural Competency Unit, and Dr Bernadette O'Neill, Senior Lecturer and Head of Clinical Communication in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, conducted the training for senior leaders, clinicians and trainees from across TMC's network.

The trip, which was supported by King's Global Engagement and TMC, focused on upskilling attendees in cultural competency, clinical communication and humanities.

The exchange was fruitful and mutually enriching. It laid the groundwork for future interdisciplinary collaboration between arts and humanities and healthcare.

King's partnership with TMC, India's oldest and largest cancer centre, has been active since 2009, with ongoing collaborations involving colleagues from the King's Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, and the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy.

Since 2021, the collaboration extended into the Faculty of Arts & Humanities through the Medical Humanities initiative.

More recently, the institutions jointly established the Intersections between Humanities and Medicine series, with three lectures by King's staff and three lectures by TMC staff. In December 2023, Dr Li and Dr O'Neill delivered the third lecture in the series, which explored “Cultural Competence and Clinical Communication Education”.

Previous King's presenters in the series include Professor Brian Hurwitz, Professor Neil Vickers, and Dr Alex Mermikides.
