King's academics recognised in 2025 Birthday Honours

Academics from the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine have been recognised in The 2025 King’s Birthday Honours list, receiving OBEs for their outstanding contributions to healthcare and medicine.

Professors Robin Ali and Adam Fox

Professor Robin Ali FMedSci

Professor Robin Ali, from the School of Basic & Medical Biosciences, has been awarded an OBE for services to gene and cell therapies.

Professor Ali leads a research group focused on developing gene and stem cell therapies for the treatment of retinal disorders. Over the course of his career, he has developed an extensive pipeline of therapies for eye disease, progressing from technology development and proof-of-concept preclinical studies, through to clinical-grade (GMP) vector manufacturing, clinical trials, and commercialisation.

He is Director of the Centre for Gene Therapy and Regenerative Medicine within the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, and Director of the King’s College London Gene Therapy Vector Facility, which manufactures clinical-grade vectors for first-in-human trials.

Professor Ali was also recently appointed Academic Lead for Advanced Therapies at King’s Health Partners (KHP), a strategic role supporting the development and integration of advanced therapeutic approaches across the partnership.

It is wonderful to receive this recognition, but it is really deserved by the whole team and by the many fantastic colleagues whose support has made any achievement possible.

Professor Adam Fox

Professor Adam Fox from the School of Life Course & Population Sciences was given an OBE for his services to paediatric allergy. He is Professor of Paediatric Allergy at Evelina London Children’s Hospital which is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’, and he is Chair of the National Allergy Strategy Group, currently leading the development of the National Allergy Strategy.

Professor Fox has held roles at Guy's and St Thomas' including clinical director for specialist ambulatory medicine, and commercial medical director for the Trust. In addition to his clinical work, he is also a Professor of Paediatric Allergy at King's.

He chaired the UK Department of Health national care pathway for food allergy in childhood and was a member of the National Institute of Healthcare and Clinical Excellence (NICE) clinical guidelines development group for the assessment and diagnosis of food allergy in children.

Professor Fox was elected as President of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in October 2018, the first paediatrician to be elected to this role. Professor Fox was the founding director of the King's College London Allergy Academy, and he has also been a trustee of Allergy UK and chair of their Health Advisory Board.

It has been my privilege to work in many teams over the years who have contributed so much to this progress, and none more so than the amazing allergy teams at my NHS Trust and King’s College London. I also hope it can raise awareness of how much more we still have to do to help improve the lives of the many people who live with allergic disease.
