Professor Delgadillo joined the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London in June 2025, following 10 years of teaching at the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Programme at the University of Sheffield and 20 years of clinical experience as a psychotherapist.
Having authored over 130 publications in scientific journals and book chapters, his work has been recognised with international awards by the Society for Psychotherapy Research and the Society for the Study of Addiction.
He currently serves as President Elect of the UK chapter of the international Society for Psychotherapy Research and is an associate editor of the society’s journal Psychotherapy Research.
Professor Delgadillo’s research focuses on understanding individual differences in psychological treatment response. Patients seeking psychological treatment for common mental health problems, like depression, may have similar symptoms, but they will be different to each other across many other domains, such as socioeconomic status, ethnicity, personality and treatment expectations. These differences affect how patients respond to treatments available in the NHS.
Professor Delgadillo’s work aims to match patients to available treatments in a personalised way, to maximise their chances of recovery.
He is investigating the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict which patients will respond to which treatment, and to support clinical decision-making. He is currently Chief Investigator of the StratCare-2 Trial and UpLift-X Trial.
Professor Delgadillo’s Inaugural Lecture was opened by Professor Matthew Hotopf CBE, IoPPN Executive Dean, who expressed pride in welcoming Jaime to the Institute after his long and successful career at the Universities of Sheffield and York.
Long-time colleague Michael Barkham, Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Sheffield, gave the Vote of Thanks.
