The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has appointed Claire Lucas, Professor of Engineering Teaching and Learning, as Deputy Chair of its Engineering Subject Benchmark review panel. Claire will play a critical role in overseeing the standards and content of undergraduate and Masters degrees in Engineering across UK higher education.

Subject Benchmark Statements set out the nature of study and academic standards expected of graduates in specific subjects. The QAA regularly reviews and updates the statements, appointing subject specialists under the leadership of a Chair and Deputy Chair who select the advisory group members to write the statement. The new review of Engineering will include focus on sustainable development, entrepreneurship, equality, diversity, inclusivity and accessibility.

Commenting on her appointment, Claire said:

“I’m delighted to have been appointed Deputy Chair for this review and look forward to starting the work with colleagues from other institutions together with employers and professional bodies. We have innovative new providers coming into the sector such as TEDI-London as well as King’s own new General Engineering degree and it is important that the standard supports these exciting developments in Engineering Education. Entrepreneurship and Sustainability are key areas to be considered in the review of the statement and my work at King’s will give me an excellent base of knowledge and experience to contribute.”
