Staff experience in the NHS: Navigating challenges and change together
Unit researchers attended the NHS Employers Conference

Researchers Antonina Semkina, Kritika Samsi and Caroline Norrie attended this popular virtual conference on Tuesday 18 November. The event focused on how staff experience can be sustained against a challenging and complex NHS backdrop.
The day started with speakers Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive, NHS Confederation, Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive, NHS Employers and Ronke Akerele, Director of Culture Transformation at NHS England, who shared their opinions on the feasibility of delivering the NHS 10 Year Health Plan.
Other sessions addressed a range of topics, including tackling violence against staff, promoting flexible working arrangements, taking a preventative approach to workforce wellbeing and developing a speaking up culture.
One memorable presentation was by Jane Keep, Head of Staff Experience, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She shared an impressive range of services, activities and initiatives which have meant their trust have been able to maintain and sustain outstanding staff experience outcomes. Key takeaways included the importance of getting the basics right, such as ensuring staff have access to food, drink and rest areas, and relentless evaluation and continuous improvement of initiatives using a range of staff feedback data sources.
