Dr Philip A Berry’s book, The War on Drugs and Anglo-American Relations: Lessons from Afghanistan, 2001-2011 has been selected as part of Choice’s prestigious Outstanding Academic Titles list for 2020.

Dr Berry, who is a Lecturer in the Centre for Defence Studies within the Department of War Studies, said:

I am delighted and honoured that my work on Anglo-American counter-narcotics policies in Afghanistan was included in such a well-respected academic list.

Choice is published by the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, and annually features a list of Outstanding Academic Titles they deem the ‘best of the best’ from 5,000 works reviewed during the past year. The works are selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as an important—often the first—treatment of a subject.

The War on Drugs and Anglo-American Relations, is the first book to examine the inside story of Britain and America’s counter-narcotics campaign in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2011. Drawn from dozens of interviews with policy practitioners on both sides of the Atlantic, the book charts the complicated decision-making process that underpinned Anglo-American policies to combat the opium trade. In doing so, it reveals where the partners cooperate but also how they were often divided by competing views of how to address the opium problem, which complicated counter-narcotics policy-making and troubled the well-established Anglo-American relationship.

Dr Philip Berry is a Lecturer in War Studies in the Centre for Defence Studies at King’s College London. His research focuses on UK foreign and security policy, Anglo-American relations, and counter-narcotics policies in Afghanistan.

You can listen to Philip Berry discussing his book on the War Studies Podcast.
