Dr Adam Bertscher is a Teaching Fellow in Public and Global Health in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine. He has worked as a researcher across a range of public and health policy research organisations.

Adam’s research focuses on health-related public policy, particularly the commercial determinants of health. Drawing on systems thinking, and with a background in mental health and psychology, his work examines how the business practices of health-harming industries and wider political-economic structures shape health outcomes. He has a particular interest in industry influence on public health policymaking. His broader research spans public health and human rights, risks in the global food system, antimicrobial resistance, and investment in cancer interventions. He has also contributed to research on animal welfare, health technology, disease surveillance programme evaluations, and public and patient involvement in health research.

Adam has taught on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in public health, international development, health policy, and qualitative research methods at King’s College London, the University of Bath, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Cape Town. His teaching focuses on equipping students with the critical skills needed to navigate complex social and public health challenges.

He holds a PhD in Social and Policy Sciences from the University of Bath, during which he completed a placement as an Inquiry Manager with the House of Commons Select Committee on Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs. He also holds an MPH in Health Systems and a BSocSci in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Cape Town, and a BA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of South Africa. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
