Biography
As an Ethics Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute (London), Ann is focused on emerging AI policy and governance and the advancement of responsible, equitable and rights-based innovation. She collaborates across public sector agencies, civil society and international organisations, such as UNESCO and the Council of Europe.
Ann also holds the position of Honorary Associate Professor in the Centre for Health Policy at the University of Melbourne, engaging in research across digital healthcare and sustainability, health humanities and public participatory approaches, such as citizen science, in digital and environmental health policy formation.
For nearly two decades, Ann has held various oversight and senior positions in higher education and government agencies in Canada, UK and Australia, supporting partnerships in data-intensive research, open science, digital heritage, and sustainable development goals. These experiences included directing an $11 million Australian state-funded innovation seed programme, managing a UK Research Councils co-funded eScience programme of the Joint Information Systems Committee and co-leading a significant digital transformation initiative for collections across the Science Museum London and national museums promoting public understanding of science, society, and medical discovery.
Research interests and PhD supervision
Ann is a highly interdisciplinary researcher and academic exploring the intersections of digital society and the socio-technical, sustainable, and rights-based implications of emerging technologies for communities and the environment. Areas of research, supervision, and lecturing have included:
- AI ethics, Public good AI and the digital commons
- Digital health informatics
- Digital cultural heritage
- Environmental health humanities
- Responsible research and innovation
Expertise and public engagement
Ann is engaged in public engagement initiatives across policy, health, and cultural sectors in Canada, UK and Australia. For her Fellowship at Kings College London, Ann is collaborating with the Science Gallery and RNIB, among other stakeholders, to investigate AI-assistive technologies for GLAM institutions in engaging low vision individuals to enhance their experience of exhibitions in a gallery space.
Her range of expertise is reflected across several Fellowships, including the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (FAIDH), Royal Society of Art (FRSA), and as an Honorary Senior Research Associate at University College London in the Department of Information Studies (her alma mater).
Ann is currently a Member of the international ITU AI for Good Global Impact Initiative Steering Committee, aligning with public innovation in achieving the sustainable development goals. Additionally, she is a Guest editor of the Citizen Science Theory and Practice Journal, and Committee member of the annual Electronic Visualisation and the Arts (EVA) London conference since 2004.
