Public and Patient Engagement Coordinator

Biography

Bella Spencer is the Public and Patient Engagement Coordinator at the Wellcome EPSRC Centre for Medical Engineering, King’s College London. She is dedicated to ensuring researchers engage the public and patient groups that their work seeks to serve in order to make research more relevant, inclusive and beneficial.

She works with research scientists, students and professional services staff within the Centre and School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) to support them in delivering meaningful public and patient engagement activities and sharing best practice. She helps lead on public engagement training, internal public engagement grant schemes, funding advice and co-ordinates the Centre’s Public Engagement Advisory Committee.

Bella has particular interest in how creativity can be used to connect diverse audiences with science. She has a background in Neuroscience and has worked with cultural organisations including The Science Museum, Science Gallery London, Orleans House Gallery and State Gallery Berlin to develop innovative, interdisciplinary events and instillations. She also creates short films, which have been shown at venues across the country, including the British Film Institute (BFI) and London City Hall, and have been aired on Channel 4.

The UK is strong in medical imaging, with the Centre hosting the largest research group in this area in Europe.The Centre combines fundamental research in engineering, physics, mathematics, computing, and chemistry with medicine and biomedical research. The 400 inter-disciplinary scientists in the Centre are transforming the diagnosis and treatment of patients, and will deliver exceptional research.
