In Vivo:

Assessment of cardiac function in small animals
Echocardiography
Telemetry (blood pressure and ECG)
Heart Rate Variability analysis (HRV)
Pressure-Volume catheters
Small animal (mouse, rat, guinea pig and rabbit) models of heart failure

aortic constriction (HFrEF)
DOCA-Salt (HFpEF)
myocardial infarction

Voluntary exercise (monitored running wheels)
Forced exercise (treadmill)

In vitro:

Isolated Langendorff and working hearts
in vitro functional assessment – LVP, coronary flow, heart rate, ECG, action potential, ion selective electrodes, P-V catheters etc)
Novel NMR spectroscopy (real time dynamic intracellular Na, ATP, PCr, Pi, pHi etc in beating hearts using ²³Na and simultaneous ³¹P energetics)
Autonomically innervated isolated hearts
Full epicardial fluorescence and voltage mapping
Isolated cardiac muscle and single cell preparations
Action potential measurements with sharp and patch electrodes
Intracellular and extracellular ion selective electrodes
Whole-cell voltage clamping
Ion fluorescence microscopy
Vascular smooth muscle myography
Standard protein biochemistry and analytical techniques

If it involves hearts or small animals and physiological measurements, you name it and we have probably done it at some time! For more details of any of the methods listed above, please contact michael.shattock@kcl.ac.uk
