Hannah Merlander
PhD Candidate
Biography
Hannah is a PhD student in the Department of English at King's College London and her research is funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership. Prior to beginning her research degree, she completed the Shakespeare Studies MA run by the Shakespeare Centre London. Her research focused on the overlaps between technologies used to create body-part props and those used to create femininity on the body of the boy actor. Her current project widens this interest in the work of theatrical transformation: querying our hierarchy of stage spaces by investigating the work done in the tiring house (the backstage space in the early modern playhouse). She will combine archival research, close text analysis and practitioner interviews to produce a diachronic reappraisal of the tiring house in both the early modern theatre and contemporary reconstructed playhouses.
