Biography
Dr Harry Swift is a Research Scientist in Physical Activity within EMBRACE (Enhanced Maternal and Baby Results with AI-supported Care and Empowerment), a research programme seeking to improve maternal, child and lifelong health through personalised human–AI interventions. EMBRACE is establishing one of the world’s largest prospective digital pregnancy cohorts, with plans to enrol 60,000 pregnant women, their partners and their babies across diverse global regions.
Harry’s research focuses on developing safe, effective and scalable physical activity interventions to improve maternal cardiovascular and metabolic health. His current work combines exercise science, artificial intelligence and digital technologies to support personalised exercise prescription during pregnancy, particularly among women at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. He has expertise in intervention development, clinical and feasibility trials, systematic review methodology, wearable-derived physical activity data and the remote delivery of exercise programmes.
Harry has more than a decade of experience designing and delivering physical activity research and interventions across academic and industry settings. He completed his PhD in Exercise Physiology, investigating the haemodynamic and cardiac autonomic adaptations to isometric exercise training. His doctoral research focused on blood pressure and exercise dose–response relationships, alongside the use of consumer wearable technologies to improve the fidelity and implementation of remotely delivered exercise programmes.
Before joining King’s College London, Harry held several academic teaching positions, most recently at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, where he taught sport and exercise science, strength and conditioning, and applied research methods. He has also worked extensively within the sports technology sector. At ORB Innovations and Remaker, Harry led applied research projects and contributed to the development, testing and validation of consumer wearable technologies and digital performance platforms. This included collaborative research with organisations such as Team GB and the British Army, evaluating technologies in ecologically valid settings.
Alongside his research career, Harry is a UK Strength and Conditioning Association-accredited coach with more than a decade of experience working with athletes and the general population. His work is united by an interest in translating rigorous exercise science into practical, accessible and individually tailored interventions that can be implemented at scale.
