Dr Kyriaki Koukouraki SFHEA

Senior Lecturer in Intercultural Education

Biography

Kyriaki holds a BA in Interpreting and a BA in Trilingual Translation (Greek, German and English) from the Ionian University of Greece. Her PhD, awarded by the Johannes-Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany, focuses on Intercultural Communication and Relations. She also holds the Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA) and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Her academic work centres on intercultural communication, culturally responsive pedagogy and the internationalisation of higher education. She plays a leading role in embedding intercultural competence across King’s curricula, supporting programme teams in designing inclusive learning environments and strengthening institutional capacity for culturally informed teaching.

Before assuming her current post, Kyriaki has been the lead of the College wide Cultural Competency Staff Programme. She continues to coordinate and deliver staff development workshops on intercultural competence and inclusive practice across the university.

Internationally, Kyriaki serves as the UK Country Director of the STAR Scholars Network and as Working Group Coordinator for ‘Intercultural Competence and Faculty Development’ at the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence. She is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Learning and Teaching and contributes to international advisory and research networks.

Her research adopts an interdisciplinary lens, drawing on cultural linguistics, intercultural communication, neuroscience and educational theory. She investigates intercultural competence development, positionality and bias, cultural influences on language learning and the experiences of international academics and students.

Her teaching supports multilingual and international student communities, equipping them with academic literacy, critical thinking and intercultural skills necessary for success at university and beyond.

In 2025, for her work at King’s, she was awarded the SHINE Award in the Outstanding Contribution category.
