Biography

Dr Nathanial Matthews is a political and environmental scientist whose principal interests lie in understanding and mitigating the impacts of political and economic change on people and the environment in developing countries. He has 20+ years of professional experience spanning 30 countries around the globe, primarily focused on Asia and Africa. Nate is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Global Resilience Partnership (GRP). GRP is a partnership of 65 diverse organizations advancing resilience through identifying and scaling on the ground innovation, generating and sharing knowledge, and shaping policy. 

Nate's has experience identifying, managing, and scaling hundreds of resilience and adaptation projects and programs in partnership with governments, NGOs, communities, and the private sector. His expertise has been recognized through contributions to various global networks, boards, and committees including as a Lead Author in The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), an Obama Foundation Mentor, a Munich Re Risk Award Judge, and a Board member of the Ocean, Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, and the Climate Development Knowledge Network. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from King’s College London and has published two books and over 70 journal articles and reports. He previously worked in leadership roles with the CGIAR, UNEP, the International WaterCentre, NGOs, and in the private sector.

Nate's focus is on interdisciplinary, systems and applied research (R4D). He seeks to engage the end-users of research at the beginning of the research process to develop impact. His current research revolves around the interconnected spheres of Water, Energy, Food and the Environment sometimes referred to as the Nexus. More specifically, he is interested in water, energy and food security and policy, ecosystem services and resilience, and sustainable intensification.
