Biography

Samantha Brooks is a Research Associate at the King’s Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR) at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King's College London.

Sam joined King's in 2009, after completing a BSc in Psychology with first class honours at Anglia Ruskin University and a PhD in Social Psychology at Loughborough University, which explored the discursive construction of agency and accountability in talk about disordered eating.

Sam’s previous work within the KCMHR involved exploring non-deployment factors associated with the mental health of service personnel; stigma and help-seeking in the Armed Forces; the wellbeing of the partners and families of military personnel; and evaluation of a smartphone app to support the mental health of Armed Forces veterans.

Sam’s other previous work within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience has included research on occupational stress; mental health service evaluation; emergency preparedness and response; resilience; disaster mental health; Type II trauma; and the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sam currently works on the Armed Forces genital Trauma and psychosexual Experiences Research project, a mixed-methods study aimed at understanding the long-term psychosocial and sexual impacts of conflict-related genital injury and developing evidence-based psychological support for this group of veterans and their partners.

Sam has contributed to teaching at King’s at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervised numerous PhD and MSc projects. Prior to joining King’s, she worked as a teaching assistant and demonstrator for the BSc in Social Psychology and BSc in Communication & Media Studies degree courses at Loughborough University. Sam is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
