Shannon is an Electron Microscopy Specialist at King’s Centre for Electron Microscopy. His expertise encompasses transmission and scanning electron microscopy, analytical SEM (EDS) and analytical scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-EDS), electron diffraction for structural characterisation, and volume electron microscopy (vEM) through Array Tomography.

He began his journey in electron microscopy during his doctoral research in planetary geoscience. Since then, he has focussed on applying advanced characterisation techniques to complex questions across both the physical and life sciences. He provides technical leadership and expert training, supporting research across a wide range of disciplines including biosciences, materials science, engineering, chemistry, and physics.

Shannon’s professional impact extends across both scientific and core facility operations. He also directs the facility’s compliance and risk management, serving as the Radiation Protection Supervisor and Facility Safety Officer, and champions the Centre’s environmental sustainability initiatives, successfully driving the facility to LEAF accreditation.
