Duties of External Examiners at King's
The main duties of an External Examiner are defined in the Assessment Boards, External Examiners and Committee Procedures. In addition to the duties detailed in the regulations, External Examiners are also required to:
- sign off the summary of results before the consideration of recommendations by the Assessment Boards;
- offer advice to the Chair of the relevant Assessment Sub-board in cases of suspected plagiarism;
- offer advice to the Chair on the relevant sections of the QAA Advice & Guidance for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education:
Please note that where External Examiners are asked to comment on student assessment, as part of the moderation process, any written comments on scripts/coursework may be released to a student as part of a Subject Access Request under the Data Protection Act 1998; therefore the judicious choice of language is recommended. Written comments relating to individual students arising during the examination process which do not need to form part of the College’s corporate record should be destroyed.
