Deterrence Challenges in the High North

Deterrence Challenges in the High North is a 24-month project funded by the Ministry of Defence's Nuclear Deterrence Fund. Based in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, the project applies innovative digital humanities methods to analyse these evolving deterrence dynamics whilst contributing to the training of the next generation of experts. The research combines computational analysis of multilingual primary sources with examination of declassified archival material from British, Nordic and NATO repositories and fieldwork across the Nordic countries including site visits and interviews with military personnel and senior civil servants.

Aims

The project seeks to enhance understanding of deterrence challenges and escalation dynamics in the High North by developing innovative research methods that overcome language barriers and improve evidence-based analysis. It provides capacity-building opportunities for early and mid-career experts through dedicated training, seminars and research positions.
